How to draw op art towers

I recently started doodling these funky organic, overlapping, op-art towers. The rhythmic lines were relaxing and calming to draw. I really got lost in this. As an art teacher, I loved all the different art concepts drawing helps to develop. Some of these concepts include:

  • organic forms
  • rhythmic lines and patterns
  • contrast
  • value
  • space

This blog post features step by step directions to complete this drawing. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I used a digital drawing tablet, but you could use a wide variety of art materials to create this (paint, sharpies, colored pencil, and more).

I would love to see how you interpret this project independently and the creative colors you choose to use. Feel free to share your solutions with me!

Step 1- Draw a large curvy line in the bottom corner.

Step 2- Add straight lines that drip down from the corners of the curvy line.

Step 3- Create more lines that curve in the same direction as the top edge.

Step 4- Consider adding a “hole” on the top of your organic form. Then, add lines inside the hole to make it look like it goes inward.

Step 5- Add another organic shape behind it.

Step 6- Repeat the same steps you used on the first organic form to create repeating rhythmic lines.

Step 7- Continue to add more organic forms moving from front to back.

Step 8- Make your organic forms get smaller as they go towards the top of the page to create a sense of space.

Step 9- Continue filling with organic forms until you reach the top of your paper.

Step 10- Start shading in every other line within the organic form. Keep your pattern consistent.

Step 11- Continue this pattern on all of your organic forms.

Step 12- Add some shading to your organic forms to create some 3 dimensionality.

Step 13- Fill the tops of the organic forms with a color your choice. Consider filling the larger forms in the front with a more saturated, dark color that get less saturated and lighter as it moves to the back.

Step 14- Add a contrasting color for the background and voila! You have a composition of funky organic form towers!
