Welcome! This blog post features a guided tutorial of how to draw a funky, curved hallway with checkerboard walls. This activity helps artists to build skills using the elements of art: SPACE, LINE, & VALUE. This composition can be done with a range of art materials, and finalized with creative color choices.
To begin, all you will need is a pencil and piece of white drawing paper! Let’s begin!

*NOTE* In this tutorial, added steps will be drawn in red. It is recommended that you draw these steps light. Draw it light ’til you get it right!*
STEP 1:
Point to the very center of your paper! Move over to the left a bit and use pencil to draw a vertical line.
STEP 2:
Draw a curved line from the top of the vertical line to the top left corner.
Draw a curved line from the bottom of the vertical line to the bottom left corner.
STEP 3:
Draw two straight lines that come from the vertical line.
STEP 4:
Continue the two straight lines by curving them up to the top and bottom right corners.
STEP 5:
Draw a straight line in the middle of the curved lines.
STEP 6:
Following the contours of the lines above, draw more lines. Aim to space these out evenly. You may need to draw more than 2 depending on the space.
STEP 7:
Draw vertical lines. Strive to have the shapes created look like squares.
Then, create a checkerboard effect by shading or coloring in every other square.
STEP 8:
On the floor, draw curving lines. Aim to have these spaced out evenly as you approach the bottom of the page.
STEP 9:
Draw horizontal lines that connect to the lines on the wall. Note how these lines are not perfectly straight and create a funky, warped effect.
STEP 10:
Finalize the checkerboard floor.
STEP 11:
On the ceiling, draw curving lines. Aim to have these spaced out evenly as you approach the bottom of the page.
STEP 12:
Draw horizontal lines that connect to the lines on the wall. Note how these lines are not perfectly straight and create a funky, warped effect.
STEP 13:
Finalize the checkerboard ceiling.
STEP 14:
Let’s finalize the last wall! You know the drill by now!
Start with a straight line through the middle. Then, add curving lines.
STEP 15:
Draw vertical lines. Strive for “square” shapes created.
STEP 16:
Finalize the checkerboard effect.
STEP 17:
Add shading! Each wall will shade from dark to light. The darkest values will be in the deepest parts of the hallway.
