Are you a beginning artist looking to build your skills with digital drawing? This step by step tutorial of a pumpkin is a great activity to develop your skills. This tutorial shows how to use layers, opacity, blending, and more! It’s fairly easy, yet produces a really cool result! So let’s make some digital marks…
What materials will I need?
In my tutorial, I will be using a free web-based drawing program, www.kleki.com. I love this program for beginners because it is so user friendly and focuses on the essentials. However, you may use any digital drawing program of your choice.
I highly recommend if you are a newbie to digital drawing that you invest in a digital drawing tablet. My personal favorite is the Wacom Intuos. The set up is easy, it’s petite but effective, and the stylus has a great feel on the tablet surface. There are lots of pressure points and I just love the response of my marks to the computer.
Step 2:
File tab > Import > Choose the saved photo of the pumpkin above > Select ‘AS A LAYER’ > Resize to fill the majority of the frame.
Step 3:
Layers tab > Select the photo layer > Drag the opacity of the photo down to 60%.
This will make it easier to see the lines when you trace the image.
Step 4:
Layers tab > Add a layer ‘+’ > rename the layer ‘OUTLINE’.
Brush tab > Choose a brush of your choice > Outline the contours of the pumpkin.
Step 5:
Layers tab > Add a layer ‘+’ > Drag it below the ‘OUTLINE’ layer> Rename it ‘COLORS’.
Brush tab > Digitally paint the colors. *Note how the black outline on top is unaffected due to the organization of the layers!*
Step 6:
Brush tab > Select the blending brush > Explore how to create highlights and shadows on your pumpkin to give it 3d form. Experiment with different values, blending levels, opacity, and brush sizes.
Use the eraser brush to clean up edges when finished.
Step 7:
Layers tab > Add a layer ‘+’ > Drag it below the ‘COLORS’ layers > Rename it ‘BACKGROUND’ layer.
Brush tab > Have fun adding a creative background of your choice and a cast shadow!
Step 8 *optional*:
Want to turn your pumpkin into a jack o lantern?
Layers tab > Add a layer ‘+’ > rename it ‘FACE’.
Brush tab > Add face details with a solid black.
Here are a few examples created by my middle school class. Many were beginner level with their digital art experience. This lesson took about two full 45 minute class periods. I encouraged creativity with background and colors. I love all the variety.
